Dr. Li Jiayang, MOA Vice Minister and President of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS),met with Prof. Anne De Paepe, Rector of Ghent University (UGent) of Belgium, and her delegation in Beijing on Oct. 28, 2014. The two sides exchanged views on further agricultural S&T cooperation and joint education programs for postgraduates.

At the meeting, Vice Minister Li reviewed the research collaboration over the past 30 years between CAAS and UGent. He spoke highly of the achievements in agricultural S&T cooperation, particularly in the field of food security, soil and water conservation, plant protection, biotechnology and agricultural remote-sensing.

Vice Minister Li noted that, based on the existing collaboration, CAAS is willing to capitalize on the platform of the Joint Laboratory of Global Change and Food Security to bring into full play respective comparative advantages, and also to broaden collaboration in livestock, animal health and agroecology. Li proposed that, apart from the S&T cooperation, the two sides establish a long-term mechanism under the framework of joint education program, to accommodate different conditions and needs, and incorporate detailed collaboration patterns and activities.

De Paepe agreed with Li on his proposal. She said UGent highly values the partnership with CAAS and also expressed her admiration for the achievements CAAS has made in agricultural S&T research. UGent stands ready to work with CAAS to promote the joint education program for postgraduates in future cooperation.
